A tribe of the people of the heavens, the original people of heaven. The Biyela Clan are direct descendant of King Shaka Zulu. King Ndaba Zulu was succeeded by King Jama Senzangakhona who was succeeded by the revolutionary militant King Shaka who made the Zulu Kingdom a force with which to be reckoned.

This particular clan’s surname changed to Biyela which means ‘to hedge around’ as the men of the clan were known for protecting the virgin maidens of their homesteads quite fiercely from the neighbouring Mqhekweni clan. Today, you will see the beginning of the land given to this clan by Shaka as you drive to uMfolozi passed Empangeni all the way beyond Biyela Lodge.

Ruled over by iNkosi Biyela under the iNgonyama Trust of HM King Goodwill Zwelithini, the territory of this tribe is divided into 15 clusters of villages which are overseen by Chief Biyela’s Indunas.
